WoodKiso hinoki cypress
Description

A tall cup for water or sake, about 180 mm tall.

A tall cup turned from Kiso hinoki and cut to the form of a length of bamboo — node and all. It is not bamboo. It is cypress, turned to look like it.

The murakumo ("gathering cloud") finish is a traditional Japanese decoration, best known from Yamanaka lacquerware: soot from a Japanese candle is laid into the urushi before it sets, so the black settles into the lacquer rather than sitting on it. The flicker of the flame leaves drifting bands of black and grey over the lighter ground. No two cups run the same way, and the pattern cannot be repeated on purpose.

  • Dimensions: about 80 mm across × 180 mm tall
  • Weight: about 120 g
  • Wood: Kiso hinoki cypress
  • The wood may change with what is in the workshop. If we cannot make your piece in the wood you chose, we write to you and offer another, or refund you in full.
  • Finish: urushi, sealed with urethane and a glass coating. The glass coating meets Japan’s Food Sanitation Act for food-contact ware.
  • Made to order — ships within about 4 weeks. If a finished piece in the wood you chose is already waiting, it ships sooner.
  • Ships from Japan. Not available to Canada — Canadian plant-health rules (CFIA D-02-12) require heat treatment for wooden items over 1.5 cm thick.

Each piece is turned individually. The photographs show pieces turned earlier — the one you receive will be similar but not identical. Grain, dimensions and weight vary from piece to piece. That variation is part of hand work, not a fault.

Every piece is turned after you order it. You can cancel within 24 hours of ordering for a full refund, unless it has already shipped. We email you a tracking number the moment it ships.

Care

Hand wash only, with warm water and a soft cloth. Not dishwasher or microwave safe. Dry immediately and keep out of direct sun. Where urushi lacquer is used, avoid abrasive cleaners.

Shipping & duties

Ships from Japan by Japan Post, with tracking and insurance. Shipping is paid by the customer and shown at checkout, separately from the price of the piece.

Except for the United States, for orders outside Japan, import taxes and any duty are set by your country and collected by the carrier when the parcel arrives. They are not included in what you pay us, and the carrier may add a handling fee. For the United States, import duty is included in the price and paid before shipping. Orders within Japan are domestic — nothing further is due.

Because each piece is unique, we do not remake it if lost; if a parcel is lost, we refund you in full. See Shipping & Delivery and Returns & Refunds for the full terms.
