Description
A pagoda turned in tiers on the lathe, roof by roof. What looks assembled is not: the body comes out of one block.
The rings stacked on the spire turn freely on their shaft — cut there and never lifted off. This is ugetsubiki, the technique the maker inherited. Around them run kesuji: hair-fine grooves, cut one at a time while the lathe turns.
- Dimensions: about 60 × 100 × 60 mm
- Weight: about 150 g
- Wood: Bog zelkova (jindai), Enju (Japanese pagoda tree)
- The wood may change with what is in the workshop. If we cannot make your piece in the wood you chose, we write to you and offer another, or refund you in full.
- Finish: walnut (tree nut) oil
- Made to order — ships within about 4 weeks. If a finished piece in the wood you chose is already waiting, it ships sooner.
- Ships from Japan. Not available to Canada — Canadian plant-health rules (CFIA D-02-12) require heat treatment for wooden items over 1.5 cm thick.
- Australia: this piece is not on Australia's list of wooden products exempt from treatment, so it may be treated on arrival. The treatment fee (currently about A$100) is charged to you by the Australian authorities, like import taxes, and damage caused by treatment is not covered.
This piece is made in small numbers. The photographs show pieces from the current batch — the one you receive will be similar but not identical. Turned by hand, one at a time, so grain, dimensions and weight vary from piece to piece. That variation is part of hand work, not a fault.
Every piece is turned after you order it. You can cancel within 24 hours of ordering for a full refund, unless it has already shipped. We email you a tracking number the moment it ships.
Care
Hand wash only, with warm water and a soft cloth. Not dishwasher or microwave safe. Dry immediately and keep out of direct sun. Where urushi lacquer is used, avoid abrasive cleaners.
Shipping & duties
Ships from Japan by Japan Post, with tracking and insurance. Shipping is paid by the customer and shown at checkout, separately from the price of the piece.
Except for the United States, for orders outside Japan, import taxes and any duty are set by your country and collected by the carrier when the parcel arrives. They are not included in what you pay us, and the carrier may add a handling fee. For the United States, import duty is included in the price and paid before shipping. Orders within Japan are domestic — nothing further is due.
Because each piece is unique, we do not remake it if lost; if a parcel is lost, we refund you in full. See Shipping & Delivery and Returns & Refunds for the full terms.
